Skiing vacation with a dog in Austria
Tips for a successful stay
Human's best and most loyal friend should not be missing on a ski vacation in Austria! By choosing the right accommodation and preparing accordingly, your beloved furry friends can accompany you to the wintry Alps without any problems.
We'll show you how to recognize dog-friendly accommodation such as ALPS RESORTS and give you practical checklists for your next winter vacation so that you can enjoy the white winter splendour side by side with your four-legged friend.
Not without my nose! Advantages of a ski vacation with a dog
He is considered man's best friend. Of course your dog comes with you on vacation - after all, you want to have a great time with him. On a hiking vacation, it goes without saying that your dog will accompany you on your tours. But on a skiing vacation, the question arises: does it even make sense to take your dog with you? After all, dogs are not allowed on the slopes and cross-country ski trails for safety reasons.
We invite you to imagine the following situations:
Think about how you take a seat on the comfortable sofa in your vacation apartment in the evening, looking out over the mountains and your beloved furball snuggles up to you. Imagine the joy of your dog rolling around in the snow and chasing fun snowballs instead of sticks. Look forward to great encounters and conversations with other dog owners on vacation. Experience how your dog really blossoms under all the new sensory impressions. And last but not least: Even the smallest lap dog still has the genes of a wolf. Dogs feel most at home in nature - especially in a pristine region like the Austrian Alps.

Suitable vacation homes and apartments in Austria
To make sure your dog is well looked after while you're enjoying yourself on the slopes, your dog-friendly accommodation should have enough space for you to spread out your dog basket and blanket. Bright, friendly, cozy and, ideally, rustic with natural materials such as wood - such accommodation conveys a sense of security. Your vacation home or vacation apartment should also be located as close to nature as possible so that your dog has plenty of space to run around and play right on the doorstep. Ideally, dog-friendly accommodation should even be located right next to the ski slopes so that you can pay your four-legged friend a spontaneous visit and go for a walk.
Tip: Here you will find all dog-friendly ALPS RESORTS directly on the ski slopes, clearly arranged at a glance. We also offer you other accommodation on the ski slopes, where dogs are allowed on request in some accommodation.
Dog-friendly accommodation is characterized by...
...that accessories such as feeding and drinking bowls, baskets and blankets can be booked. The staff will give your four-legged companion a warm welcome - for example with a small treat. They will also be happy to advise you on your dog-friendly leisure plans:
Which (winter) hiking trails are particularly recommended for dogs? Which restaurants and mountain huts are considered dog-friendly? Which activities and events can your dog accompany you to? Are there dog schools or supervised dog facilities on site? And are there special dog playgrounds or a vet nearby in case of an emergency?
At ALPS RESORTS, your four-legged friends are welcome guests. In our Holidays with dogs section, you will find all our dog-friendly accommodation that is particularly well equipped to meet the needs of your animal companion.
Tips for a successful ski vacation with your dog in Austria
Preparation is everything! Normally, dogs cope well with snow and cooler temperatures - thanks to their wolf genes. To ensure that your four-legged friend has as much fun on a winter vacation in the Alps as you do, you should consider the following points in advance:
- Is your dog used to staying home alone for several hours? If not, you should train this in advance so that you can race down the slopes without any worries.
- Would it be a better alternative to have him looked after on site for hours while you are skiing on the slopes, with other playmates in a dog kennel or by a dog sitter?
- Has your dog ever come into contact with snow? For dogs of vacationers from snow-free regions, this experience can be unfamiliar.
- Warmly equipped: For certain dog breeds, for example with short hair, a dog coat/cape should be packed.
What else you need for your ski vacation with a dog in Austria:
- Microchip identification
- EU pet passport with current vaccination status (e.g. against rabies)
- Leash or dog harness
- Muzzle if necessary (may be compulsory in certain ski resorts)
- Favorite toys, cuddly toys and treats
- Transport box for the car
- Brush and towels for wet paws
- Medication, if needed
In some dog-friendly ALPS RESORTS you can borrow blankets and bowls. However, if your dog is fussy or feels more comfortable with familiar objects, you should bring your own utensils. You'll be amazed at how quickly your animal companion will feel right at home during your ski vacation with us!
FAQs: Frequently asked questions about skiing vacations with dogs
What activities can I do during my ski vacation with my dog?
Winter walks are an ideal leisure activity that you can do together with your dog. Your four-legged friend will be thrilled when you walk through snow-covered fairytale forests or hike to waterfalls with glistening icicles. Depending on their size and character, your dog can even accompany you tobogganing or on natural cross-country ski trails (dogs are usually not allowed on groomed trails). Christmas markets, restaurants, alpine huts or (carnival) parades are also a fascinating experience for dogs. We will be happy to advise you on suitable activities at your ALPS RESORTS accommodation.
