Winter Vacation List

Be Fully Prepared

Gone are the days of the nervous "Did we really remember to pack everything?" Thanks to our comprehensive packing list for your winter vacation, you'll now have your bags packed in no time, ready for a worry-free journey to the snowy mountains.

Universal Essentials for Your Winter Vacation

As is so often the case: planning is half the battle. The better prepared you are when you start packing your suitcase for your winter vacation, the more relaxed your time out in the mountains will be.

In addition to casual and/or evening wear, your personal hygiene items and first-aid kit, these basics should be on your packing list for your winter vacation:

Clothing:

  • Hat, tube scarf, functional clothing, thermal underwear. The onion-skin principle is a great way to balance out temperature fluctuations during outdoor sports in winter. Pack clothing for several layers.
  • Warm socks, good gloves and insulated winter boots should not be missing from your winter vacation packing list. As the body supplies the "important" organs with blood first in cold weather, we freeze the fastest in the extremities. Cold toes and fingers can be really uncomfortable! In an emergency, a hand warmer can work wonders.

Accessories:

    • Backpack, first aid kit, lighter
    • Seat mat, lunch box and thermos flask for warming drinks
    • Ski goggles and sunglasses, cold protection cream and lip balm
    • Flashlight or headlamp: It gets dark early in winter, with a headlamp you are also ideally equipped for night hikes.

Documents and car:

    • Passport or identity card
    • Important documents such as international health insurance and e-card, booking confirmation for vacation accommodation and transportation
    • List of emergency numbers and addresses
    • Mobile phone, tablet and charging cable
    • Inform yourself in advance about vignette, winter tire and snow chain requirements.
    • Indoor & wellness: When it's stormy and snowing outside, it's all the more cozy inside. So don't forget your e-reader and that book you've been meaning to read for so long. Does your accommodation have a wellness area, a private sauna or even a (whirlpool) pool? Put a bikini, swimming trunks and slippers on your packing list for your winter vacation!

The rest of your equipment and clothing will depend on your planned activities. Are you a skier, winter hiker or are you going on a winter vacation with the family?

Packing List for Ski Vacations – What Do You Need for Your Winter Sports Enjoyment?

For many, those "planks" mean the world: skiing is the number one winter sport in the Alps. Are you among those folks who can hardly wait for the season to start and are one of the first people standing in line at the lifts? Or are you more of the spring snow & lounge chair team? In either case, when packing for your ski vacation, don't forget the following items—in addition to the essentials already mentioned:

  • Ski suit, ski pants and ski jacket
  • Ski gloves and ski socks
  • Storm hood
  • Ski goggles and ski helmet, possibly a back protector
  • Skis, ski boots, poles: If you want to save space in your car and use the latest ski model every year, it's best to use the local ski rental shop. In the vast majority of winter sports resorts, you can hire ski sets in the sports stores. Our tip: ALPS RESORTS cooperation partners offer exciting discounts on equipment rental. Find out more before you arrive, ask the reception team and book online.
  • Snowboard / splitboard and snowboard boots
  • Freeride / ski touring equipment: touring skis, telescopic poles, touring ski boots, skins, crampons. Avalanche equipment is as essential as tour planning and checking the avalanche report and the snow and weather situation. This includes an avalanche transceiver, an avalanche probe, an avalanche backpack and a shovel.
  • Backpack with first aid kit, thermos flask

Winter Nature Experience - Packing List for Winter Hikers and Nature Enthusiasts

Are you one of those winter holidaymakers who craves experiences away from the actual pistes? Before you leave home, make sure these essential items are safely tucked away in your suitcase:

  • Functional clothing (onion principle), hat, tube scarf
  • Winter hiking boots (preferably with a Gore-Tex membrane) and warm socks
  • In order to keep your hands warm and protected, you should invest in a pair of high-quality, insulated gloves. Finger gloves keep your fingers flexible
  • Telescopic poles, snowshoes if necessary
  • Backpack with lighter, seat pad, lunch box and thermos flask for warm drinks and first aid kit. A small emergency kit can save lives. Think of bandages, painkillers and blister plasters.
  • Binoculars and camera: for observing wildlife and mountain peaks, capturing unforgettable moments and natural beauty ...
  • A GPS device or smartphone app with offline maps will help you find your way through the snowy landscape and choose the right route. If you are heading off the marked trails, you will need to check the avalanche report and carry avalanche equipment.

Winter Getaway with the Whole Family

What You Should Definitely Pack!

A well-thought-out packing list for a winter vacation with the family is the key to a successful break with your children.

  • Clothing: Hats, tube scarf, gloves, functional clothing, winter jacket and snow pants. Be prepared for the fact that you - or at least your children 😉 - may get wet in the snow and remember to bring appropriate spare clothing.
  • Winter boots: Invest in good, non-slip footwear - waterproof and insulated to keep the little ones' feet warm
  • Ski equipment: For children in particular, it makes sense to hire ski equipment from a local sports store. This ensures that the equipment fits perfectly and you don't have to invest in new, expensive skis and ski boots every year. Not to mention the space in the car ... Reading tip: Mitch Schweighofer from the Adventure ski school told us in the article Pizza, chips, munchkins what to look out for in children's ski lessons.
  • Sledges or toboggans: A fun toboggan ride is simply part of a winter vacation with the family. Sledges are usually available to hire locally. Find out about rental options in your resort in advance and don't forget your ski helmet!
  • Sunscreen and cold cream, sunglasses and ski goggles: the sun can be just as strong in winter as it is in summer. Pack sunscreen with a high light factor and cold protection cream to prevent skin damage. Eye protection is also important in winter: snow and ice reflect sunlight particularly strongly.

Snacks and drinks: Keep your family's energy levels high by taking plenty of snacks and warm drinks with you.

  • Games and entertainment: Don't forget games and books for the children for cozy evenings in the vacation home
  • Medication and first aid kit: Make sure you have all the necessary medication and a first aid kit for minor injuries
  • They grow up so quickly, so remember your (cell phone) camera and chargers to capture the beautiful vacation moments with your children
