Hike through the Rauris primeval forest

Natural gem in the Hohe Tauern National Park

This destination should be at the top of your bucket list for your holiday in the Rauris Valley! We laced up our hiking boots and headed into the wilderness: there is so much to discover on a hike through the Rauris primeval forest...

Where is the Rauris Primeval Forest?

Primeval forests in Austria? That's right – and you can find one of them in Rauris in the Salzburg region. The 30 km long Rauris Valley is located in the Hohe Tauern National Park, the largest protected area in the Alps. At the end of the Rauris Valley, in Kolm Saigurn, lies the Rauris Primeval Forest at the foot of the Hoher Sonnblick.

The nature trail through the Rauris primeval forest was named one of the 33 best nature trails in Austria in 2014. One more reason to tackle the hike through the Rauris primeval forest!

How to get to the Rauris Virgin Forest

In summer, you can reach the starting point of the hike through the Rauris Virgin Forest by car or public transport (bus line 640): you can reach the Lenzanger car park at 1,550 m via the 5 km toll road to Kolm Saigurn. With your National Park Summer Card, you do not have to pay the toll.

The hike through the Rauris virgin forest

Which way to go?

At the Lenzanger car park, we shoulder our rucksacks and start the hike on the Almenweg trail. Over roots and between mighty conifers, the path leads uphill for about 30 minutes, ideal for ‘warming up’. We love it: incredible greenery, moss, birds chirping and the sound of water. Once we reach the Durchgangalmen, we let our gaze wander. To the right, we see the Hoher Sonnblick, the most striking peak in the Goldberg Group, and the Gainschniggalm. To the left, we see the Kolmkarspitz and Silberpfennig. The names date back to the gold rush era – at its peak, the Rauris Valley was probably responsible for up to 10% of the world's gold production.

The nature trail through the Rauris primeval forest begins below the Gainschniggalm. Ancient Swiss stone pines and dark moor ponds reflecting the surrounding peaks, huge anthills teeming with activity. Along the nature trail (approx. 30 minutes), information boards explain the special features of the centuries-old storm-damaged forest in the Hohe Tauern National Park. We continue along a wide forest path to the Ammererhof and the Naturfreundehaus. The return to the Lenzanger car park takes about 20 minutes via the forest road.

With an altitude difference of approx. 200 metres and a duration of approx. 2 hours, the hike through the Rauriser Urwald is also suitable for children, but the route is not suitable for pushchairs.
We can also tell you about a shorter version of the Rauriser Urwald hike: take the bus to Ammererhof, the last stop in Kolm Saigurn. From there, hike to Gainschniggalm and back to Ammererhof via the Rauriser Urwald nature trail (approx. 1 hour).

Huts on the Rauris virgin forest hike

A platter of fresh farmhouse bread, cheese and bacon tastes particularly good at the huts along the hike through the Rauris virgin forest.

The Durchgangalm, Filzenalm, Gainschniggalm, Erlehenalm, Ammererhof and Naturfreundehaus at the end of the Kolm Saigurn valley are all open for business. At the Gainschniggalm, Sophie bakes her famous farmhouse doughnuts. And near the Kolm Saigurn toll station, the Alpengasthof Bodenhaus serves traditional specialities and really delicious pastries.

Educational: Rauris primeval forest hike with a national park ranger

During the summer months, a trained national park ranger leads a weekly tour through this beautiful corner of the world. You will learn interesting facts about the origins and special features of the Hohe Tauern National Park and, with a little luck, discover Alpine newts, grass frogs and other inhabitants of the Rauris primeval forest. Dates and detailed information are available from the Rauris Tourist Office or from the staff at the reception of our ALPS RESORT Carpe Solem Rauris. The ranger hike is free with your National Park Summer Card.

The Rauris Valley in the Hohe Tauern National Park

The municipality of Rauris is the largest national park municipality in the Salzburg region in terms of area. And that with a population of around 3,000. The valley is around 30 km long and lies between the Fuschertal valley with the Grossglockner High Alpine Road and the Gasteinertal valley with its famous healing springs. It is approximately 30 km to Zell am See-Kaprun.

In summer, the Rauris Valley attracts visitors with 295 km of hiking trails and alpine paths that lead across lush alpine pastures and to the peaks of the Goldberg Group, along babbling brooks and through energising forests such as the Rauriser Urwald. Due to its gold mining history, the national park valley is also known as the ‘golden valley of the Alps’. Bearded vultures, griffon vultures and golden eagles circle in the Rauriser Krumltal valley.
