Practical Packing List for your Ski Vacation

How to start your skiing holiday

When the mountains are calling and the snow-white winter fun beckons, there's no stopping many people. Off you go on vacation! To avoid a rude awakening full of unwanted "improvisations" at your destination, you should draw up a packing list for your ski vacation in advance.

This will ensure you are well prepared for all eventualities. A well thought-out packing list saves space in your suitcase. You'll find the perfect accommodation close to the slopes at ALPS RESORTS. The perfect packing list right here.

Tips for Creating an Individualized Packing List for Your Ski Vacation

In winter, you need more clothing than in summer, and active vacationers need more changes of clothes than those on trips purely for culture or leisure. Accordingly, sporty winter holidaymakers need a good packing list to avoid their suitcases bursting at the seams.

First, the amount of clothing to pack depends on the duration of your stay and your planned activities. If you're going to be active all day, you should always pack an extra set of underwear, socks, and shirts/long sleeves. To be completely safe, plan a double set of basic wardrobe for each day. Take everything times two, as a simple rule of thumb.

Bring with You or Rent on Location?

Depending on the type and frequency of your winter sports activities, you should first consider which equipment you want to take with you and which you want to rent on site. If you take a classic skiing holiday several times a day, you will of course pack your own skis and equipment. Do you also want to round off your ski vacation with activities such as sledging, ice skating or winter hiking? Equipment such as toboggans, ice skates or snowshoes take up a lot of space. In this case, it is advisable to hire these on site, unless the sport in question is a regular part of your leisure activities on vacation.

Further Questions to Ask Yourself in Advance:

  • Are you planning to visit a spa? Does your accommodation have a wellness area with pool and sauna like many of our ALPS RESORTS? Then you should also pack the right swimwear
  • Should it be a purely active vacation or would you also like to take advantage of cultural offers? Then you should have enough "normal" clothing such as cardigans, jeans and blouses ready in addition to functional sportswear and ski clothing.
  • Are you going on a skiing vacation over the Christmas holidays, New Year's Eve or for a special occasion? Then a more elegant wardrobe is also a must.
  • How quickly do you get cold or sweaty?
  • Are you sensitive to scratchy materials such as wool? Do you have alternative materials such as cotton or synthetic fibers to hand?
  • Are you traveling with children or are you going on a ski vacation with a dog? How well is the accommodation equipped for their needs? What can you find on site (e.g. food bowls), what do you have to bring yourself? At ALPS RESORTS, we make it easy for you: here you can find all our dog-friendly accommodation - directly on the ski slopes - at a glance.

Making Packing Easy – Here’s How

Selecting the Right Clothing

  • Use the layering principle ("onion-skin principle") on a ski or winter vacation to be able to adapt to individual temperature conditions in a flash.
  • It is important that the clothes can be easily combined with each other
  • Create a capsule wardrobe for this. Combine two basic colors (such as black, white, grey, beige) with one or two signal colors (for example red or blue). By reducing the number of colors, there are numerous alternatives for combining clothes again and again so that you can get by with fewer items of clothing.
  • Choose clothes of different lengths and thicknesses for the layering look.

Space-Saving Packing Tips

  • Use cavities such as shoes to pack small or fragile items.
  • Fill ski or hiking rucksacks with clothing, games or provisions.
  • Take it with you or hire it? This question applies to sports equipment such as toboggans or ice skates. The first option saves money, the second saves space.
  • Choose travel-sized cosmetics such as hand wash or shampoo. This saves space in the beauty case.
  • If you roll up your clothes instead of stacking them flat in your suitcase, you can also save space with the right technique.
  • Inquire at your accommodation or at the local tourist information office about local shopping opportunities. Your guest card often entitles you to discounts on sports clothing and equipment. If you forget something or something breaks, it's no problem to stock up on the spot. A guest card is already included in your stay at ALPS RESORTS.
  • Leave a little space in your suitcase for travel souvenirs. From culinary delicacies to traditional handicrafts, the Alpine region has some special features to offer that you will also enjoy at home.
