Autumn holidays in Austria

Exclusive natural spectacle meets 595-metre-long dumpling table: our bucket list for your autumn vacation in Austria.

#1 Natural spectacle: colorful mountains in Autumn

When the trees drop their leaves in autumn, we lace up our mountain boots. The visibility in Austria's mountains is great, the temperatures are nice and cool and the air is dry. Blue skies, white peaks, colorful forests and a few meters of altitude in the legs: These are enough reasons for the mind and soul to rejoice! Please consider the following points when hiking on your autumn vacation in Austria:

1. check the opening times of huts, cable cars and toll roads before your hike.

2. it can be quite cold - especially in the early morning. Pack a hat and gloves!

3. The days are getting shorter: plan to be back at your vacation home in good time before dark and don't forget your headlamp in case of an emergency.

4. Sturdy shoes with a good tread: Especially in autumn it can be quite slippery due to wetness and leaves.

5. the marmot makes itself comfortable in its burrow for an extended nap, the chamois gets ready for winter. Watch out for wildlife, stay on the marked trails and avoid wildlife reserves. Find out about hunting times and adhere to road closures.

#2: Natural spectacle: colorful mountains in Autumn

September is rutting season. The stags vie for the favor of the females and you can hear them roaring from afar in their hormone-soaked territorial battles. On your autumn vacation in Austria, you have the chance to witness this impressive natural spectacle. For example, on a national park excursion with a trained ranger. They know the rutting grounds of the red deer and can show you some big stags. In the Hohe Tauern National Park vacation region, such a ranger tour in the Rauris Valley is included for guests with the National Park Summer Card. Tours are also offered in the Gesäuse near the Erzberg Alpin Resort.

#3: Culinary delights: what's on the table during your autumn vacation in Austria

Hiking vacations are even happier when there is something delicious to eat after the mountain tour. So it's only fitting that chanterelles (chanterelles) sprout from the forest floor in summer and fall. Or can you resist chanterelle goulash with bread dumplings and breaded porcini mushroom slices? And what about cranberry dumplings? Cranberries, blueberries, blackberries: The small, blue superfood not only tastes great, the healing properties of the berries have been known for centuries. Where the best mushroom and berry spots are hidden around our ALPS RESORTS will of course not be revealed! 😁 If you find what you're looking for, you can prepare the treasures you've picked yourself in the fully equipped kitchens of our vacation homes and apartments (click here for more simple recipes for your vacation home). For everyone else, it's best to ask at reception which restaurants or inns near your vacation resort serve these fine delicacies. Other classics on an autumn holiday are venison and roe deer dishes and doughnuts in all shapes and flavors. These are often served and eaten at (farmers') autumn festivals in Austria.

#4: Harvest festivals, farmers' autumn and culinary festivals

Which brings us to the next item on our bucket list for an autumn vacation in Austria: a visit to one of the countless festivals that take place in Austria from late summer to November. These range from the legendary dumpling festival in St. Johann in Tirol with its 595-long dumpling table and around 12,000 visitors to the HeuArt Festival in the Lammertal valley with the world's largest hay figures parade. In the Salzburger Land alone, an incredible 2,000 customs events are staged in around 75 villages as part of the Bauernherbst. Among the highlights are the cattle drives with elaborately decorated cattle, which are led back from the alpine pastures to the barn after the alpine summer.

#5: Forest walk or fall skiing?

Difficult decision. For some, winter can't start soon enough. With waxed skis and full of anticipation, it's off to autumn skiing - for example to the Kitzsteinhorn glacier ski area in Salzburger Land. The ski season there starts in October or November at the latest. We reveal the good reasons for an early start in the article "Extralong ski season on the Kitzsteinhorn".

For those who prefer to stay in the valley, we recommend a long walk in the forest. For example in Murau, one of the most densely wooded regions in Austria in Styria. The first positive effects of a walk in the forest can be felt after just 15 minutes: stress subsides, your pulse rate drops and your head clears. We took a forest bath. You can read how we like the trend from Japan in the article "Forest bathing: Immerse yourself and take a deep breath".
